6:30pm - Gallery Reception:  The Lodge
Lost Vegas:  Color Photography 1985-2007 by
Steve Weiss/Candid Landscapes
Phoenix
Steve Weiss states, “In the morning and at dusk starting in 1985 and for almost each succeeding year, I went out to the Strip and the Downtown, finding inhuman replicas and strange incongruities.  As Vegas replaces one form of kitsch with another, I was given the opportunity to see new parts as old parts were imploded.  The works displayed and the upcoming limited-edition book, Lost Vegas, will tell that story.”  Since 2002, he has coordinated micro-cinema screenings of shorts and feature films under the umbrella organization "No Festival Required", including an eight-screening 2008-2009 series at Phoenix Art Museum.  Weiss is a 2001 Contemporary Forum Artist Grant Recipient. Steve Weiss will be in attendance and will make a presentation at 7pm.

7:00pm - CF Lecture Series:  Josiah McElheny
Phoenix Art Museum - Whiteman Hall

Co-sponsored by F.A.R.@ ASU, this lecture will feature artist Josiah McElheny who will discuss the wide-ranging ideas about modernism, cosmology and the metaphoric potentials of glass embodied in his work, The Last Scattering Surface, which recently became part of Phoenix Art Museum's contemporary collection.  Working with Ohio State University Cosmology Professor David Weinberg, who will also be part of the presentation, McElheny's chandelier proposes that even the images created by design and industry absorb the intellectual constricts of the day.  The hanging sculpture re-imagines an emblem of 20th century design as sculpture of dense physical and conceptual complexity by using the theories of cosmology to determine the placement of every physical element.  Sponsored by Bentley Gallery/Bentley Projects.  This event is open to the public.

7:00pm - David Kessler Studio Tour
Phoenix

Painting highly realized water landscapes on aluminum which he has abraded with various wire brushes, David Kessler creates an image that is produced partially by paint and partially by refracted light. The resulting surface has a slightly holographic effect, giving the appearance of movement in the water surface as the painting is viewed from different angles. These large- scale works are painted from intimate close-in images of calm or rippled water surfaces and range from the immediately recognizable to the fairly abstract.
